Workplace Organization (also 5-S)
Type: Class lectures, practical exercises
Number of sessions: 6 sessions
Length of sessions: 4 hours
Total hours: 24 hours
Target
audience:
The
course is designed for employees from all organizations, profit
or non-profit, public or private, service or manufacturing. The
skills learned apply to business owners, company executives, local,
state and federal officials, health care professionals, financial
professionals, middle managers, administrative personnel, and employees
of manufacturing and service organizations. The Lean People for
a Lean Enterprise class is a recommended but not required prerequisite.
Summary
of content:
•
Understanding workplace organization and its importance to daily
workflow.
• Process inputs and outputs, internal and external customers
and-suppliers
• Video: 5-S at Boeing and other models for 5-S & 6-S.
• Target Area review. Defining the area: Intended purpose
vs current usage.
• Dance Charts, Spaghetti Diagrams of various flows: people,
information, materials.
• 6-S workplace Audit; 6-S Safety Audit and participants will
be trained on how to conduct future audits. This is the KEY to sustainability!
• Data collection methods – Establishing 6-S Communications
Center.
• Red Tagging & Yellow tagging and implementation including:
painting lines, establishing staging areas, inbound/outbound, shadow
boards, cleaning stations, and other basic visual controls
• Establishing short-term and long-term disposition areas.
• Analyzing and displaying the data – Spider-grams,
etc.
• Working with management; project mission clarification,
progress reports
Objectives and benefits:
The
objectives are for participants to develop abilities to improve
their immediate workplace organization and establish “systems”
for cleanliness and workflow, which leads to a reduction of internal
costs. Benefits include a reduction of internal costs and increase
in competitive advantages, market share, and profits and achievement
of long-term business goals and self-auditing. Benefits also include
an increase in both employee and customer satisfaction.
